During the last 38 years, the Iranian Geotechnical Society, IGS, has taken several effective steps toward the promotion and development of geotechnical engineering and science, qualitative and quantitative progress of specialized geotechnical engineers, improvement of education and research, and quality enhancement of geotechnical engineering practice. All these achievements and successes have been possible with the efforts of our society members, particularly the pioneers, founders, and the boards of directors. Having about 600 members, currently IGS is among the most active and recognized professional and academic societies of the country. IGS has also established constructive relationships with the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering (ISSMGE) and the related regional societies. Currently, extensive economical and human resources are being devoted to numerous civil and industrial projects in local, regional, and national levels. This provides intuitively a historical opportunity for our society to highlight the significance and determining position of geotechnic, as a basic science and engineering discipline, in optimal design, construction and operation of all types of ground-based structures. . | | IGS acknowledges this opportunity and, therefore, applies all its capacity and effort for the betterment of presenting and enhancement of geotechnical engineering and science. No doubt that in order to achieve the above main goal, the following sub-goals must be targeted: quality enhancement of geotechnical services (both software and hardware services) in practice, more and closer communication between theory and practice, and knowledge enhancement of geotechnical engineers via continuing education and maintaining closer relationships with the state of the art in geotechnic.
My colleagues and I in the 11th IGS board of directors devote all our efforts to accelerate the achievement of the above goals. Of course, we appreciate helps and contributions of all of our society members, including the pioneered and more experienced members and the young active members. A.
