About Iranian Geotechnical Society

 

 
The first step to establish the Iranian Geotechnical Society (IGS) has been taken in August 1971, after the first general assembly meeting of geotechnical experts in 19th August of that year. The meeting was hold after the attendance of Prof. H.B. Poorooshasb, and Dr. H. Dezfoulian in the meeting of members of Soil Mechanic and Foundation Committees in the Fifth Regional Asian Conference in Bangkok. The establishing committee was selected for preparing the society’s article of constitution and formal warranty of organizing the society was given to Prof. Poorooshasb in September 1971. The first Board of Directors was selected after preparation and approval of society’s article of constitution.
The society was accepted as a member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) in 1974. The annual membership for that year was paid by Jioco, Dames and Moore and Tehran Berkeley Companies in May 1975.
After glorious victory of Islamic Revolution, Society’s Article of Association had been subjected to some amendments and changes requested by the Ministry of Interior. These were announced in the official journal on January 18,1984, and its links with the International Society has been established again since January 1985.
In recent years, progressive activities have been carried out for preparing national regulations, extending relationship with the International Society and also professional cooperation between society members. Articles of constitution of the society were revised again in 1993 under the new rules requested by the Ministry of Interior.

Chronology of Events

  • 26 July 1971: request of Dr. Poorooshab and Dr. Dezfoulian to hold the 6th conference in Shiraz University; in 1976 in the meeting of representatives of national soil mechanics and foundation committees, during the 5th Regional Asian conference of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering in Bangkok, Thailand.
  • 30 July 1971: request of Dr. Pooroshasb and Dr. Dezfoulian from Dr. Nash
  • 14 August 1971: the first general meeting of 21 geotechnical engineers in head office of Shiraz University in Tehran and selection of establishing committee for preparation of the article of association.
  • 16 August 1971: The first meeting of establishing committee for preparing the article of association.
  • 23 September 1971: formal license of establishment issued by the government
  • 7 October 1973: Approval of general outline of the article in a meeting coincident with the first civil engineering congress in Shiraz.
  • 10 June 1973: Second general convene in the hall of technical faculty of Tehran University and temporary approval of the article of association.
  • 30 July 1973: holding general meeting in the head office of Shiraz University in Tehran with 12 participants, final approval of the article of association and selection of first board of directors.
  • 1 August 1973: announcement first meeting of the board of directors in computer center of Tehran University.
  • 22 August 1973: holding of first meeting of the board of directors in computer center of Tehran University.
  • 12 May 1975: Annual membership in the International Society was paid by Jioco, Dames and Moore and Tehran Berkeley companies.
  • August 1975: Publication of first issue of the newsletter by Dr. H. Dezfoulian.
  • 17 July 1976: final version of the article of association approved by the Ministry of Science and National Police was caused to sign by society’s board of directors.
  • 31 August 1976: society’s license issued from National Police.
  • November 1977: Establishment of  "Soil Mechanic Committee of Iranian Association of Engineers".
